What students want in a teacher

(Work in progress)

Asking students what is important to them as far as traits of a teacher goes.

  • "Understanding and pretty good at responding to emails, Especially for pure online class"
  • "Teachers should also be....teachable. Which sounds weird. But I think it's important to be open to different pedagogies and ways of doing things. It's important that teachers also learn from their students (once upon a time I did critique an instructor's materials and they did end up changing them, so good for that instructor and the class ended up being better in future semesters from what I heard). Also someone who is understanding of student issues and willing to work with a student to get back on track."
  • "I think clear expectations on assignments are important. Communication, willingness to answer questions, and constructive feedback. One thing I always found helpful in classes where midterm and final exams were required was a study guide. I think it should be the aim of the professor to make it clear to the student what they are expected to have learned by a certain point in the semester, and test accordingly. Also, an instructor who can answer questions in an informative manner, without being condescending."
  • "Teachers that understand that college students are adults. Bro I have a mortgage and work 50 hours a week plus school. Do not talk to me like I am in middle school and can't be trusted. Also don't lock your week class work until midnight between Sunday and Monday and expect me to be able to have everything done by friday"
